heat!!!

Have my phone in my pocket on standby - few apps open (email, browser, eBay) and I find my battery is rapidly running down and get so hot I have to take it out of my pocket! Running 4.1 cos the guys at EE won't release 4.3 cos of overheating problem on the update. I know processors get hot but is the heat not conducting out properly? I strip down, clean and put new thermal paste on my laptop processors so is this age and build up of crap in my phone or what??
