GPS issues since update

Hello Sony and other users

If updated my Neo last week from the stock firmware to 2.3.3 build 4.0.A.2.368.

After that I have issues with GPS signal (DOP). Programs like RunGPS, Google Maps and Navigon loses GPS signal exactly every 5 minutes für about 30 seconds. After that, the DOP is good again. Sometimes it helps to restart the phone, sometimes not. I've tried to find out if it depends, which programs are in the memory but nothing is really obvious.

The issue looks like this:

DOP.jpg

Yesterday I've updated to 2.3.4  4.0.2.A.0.42, but the issue is the same. I've read in another forum that sometimes an update of Googe maps could cause this problem. So I've deinstalled the last update of Goggle maps. Before that I had this issue, directly after that it was gone, but it came back although I did not install the update of googe maps again (Auto update was disabled).

Before the firmware updates I did not have this issues.

What can I do? Are there some log files, which can help? Any idea?

With this issue the GPS is not really usable. Is it possible to downgrade?

Thanks

Hi Oskar again

I saw something in this thread here. After the last two restarts, where I started RunGPS and alogcat right away the problem occurs after 3h23min, in both cases, funny.

Hello Oskar again, sorry, but I want to find a solution.

If you look to the big log file you will find since 18:31

and so on. Every 5 minutes.

But the loss starts at 19:01, strange.

I am in the UK and got an Xperia Ray on Tuesday this week. I tried to use the GPS for the first time today and got the same problem as everybody else - GPS is lost every 3-5 minutes (this caused me no end of problems when driving around an area I do not know!). My phone is factory unlocked and I have not yet put a sim card in it.

I am going to try flight mode or putting in a sim to see if this helps. If not, I will be returning it on Monday as GPS is an essential feature for me.

Hi guys

I found a temporary solution !!

Try these settings:

GSM only, data connection and roaming data OFF

then in the sub menu "position" --> "use wireless network" ON and "use gps satellites" ON

this work for me, no more drops every 5 minutes

I tryed for 40 minutes of navigation with Sygic, and it was very nice

Hope this bug could be cured soon, my is only an home made solution, not the definitely one

agps must not work during navigation !

Hi Oskar, hi All

During the search for a solution I give myself root acces to my phone which officially messed up my garanty, but anyway. After playing around with the gps.conf, I messed it up.

Behind the scenes I had some private messages with Oskar to bring my gps.conf to work again.

After some problems I should be back to factory gps.conf now and now everything is working.

It works since friday and a 6 hours recording. It also works now even without data connection. Everything is fine. This is strange, because I changed nothing compared to the status before the root access thing. I just added "supl" to the APN settings.

@Oskar: Do you have an explanation for that? Are you sure that "INTERMEDIATE_POS=0" was activated in the original gps.conf? I remember that there was a # before it. But maybe I remember it wrong.

Thanks

Hi JojoNeo,

Can you please do this simple test with 'GPS Test'. It takes about 10 minutes.

1. Switch off wifi and 3G

2. Run 'GPS Test'

3. Goto 'setting' and 'Clear AGPS'

Your phone should now take a while to lock on to the satellites since there are no aGPS data. After you obtain GPS lock, please observe to see if you can obtain a continuos lock for at least 10 minutes.

In my case, my GPS is lost after about 5 minutes. The screen on GPS Test seems to freeze for about 30s and then I get back GPS again. It repeats every 5 minutes.

Hope to hear your results.

Thanks.

Hello wah

I did what you sad and there are losses every 5 minutes. In my case they are not 30sec,but only 5sec, But even this is not acceptable.

After GPS Test I switched to RunGPS, because I can see the losses in the DOP without starring at the phone for 10min, and they are there. Then I reactivated the 3G connection and the drops are gone.

I don't know, what we (I) did, but with a data connection it works now.

Hi JojoNeo,

That's good news! 🙂

The reason why it works since adding "supl" to the APN type is that there is now a data connection specified to be used for SUPL connections.

Every 5 minutes the GPS chip checks if any assistance data is needed such as data about the satellite orbits. Such data is downloaded from a SUPL A-GPS server. To be able to access that server an APN with the APN type "supl" is needed.

I'd like to know from where you got the APN settings that didn't include the "supl" APN type.

Were those settings pre-installed when you got the phone? Did you get them by using the "Download settings for Internet and MMS" or did you enter the settings manually yourself?

Edit: "INTERMEDIATE_POS=0" was activated in the original gps.conf. There were also some other settings with an # in front of them, but I didn't include these since they were not active.

Hi wah,

I'm a SW engineer as Sony Ericsson working with GPS.

The problem that JojoNeo had was originally that the GPS fix was lost every 5 minutes even though the 3G connection was active.

The problem that you're describing as a bit different and we're investigating it right now.
