Feature Suggestion - Camera quickshot button

I have a suggestion for my new Xperia Arc S. I have just recently purchased this phone and whilst I am very impressed with my first Android phone I have one little niggle that I feel could be resolved in a quite straightforward way.

One of the main reasons I own a smartphone is to be able to have a reasonably decent digital camera handy when my kids do something spontaneously funny and I want to capture it. On my previous smartphones it was a simple case of tapping in a quick security code and then pressing the camera button which via a button customisation ability feature in the settings would automatically open the camera app of preference. This doesn't happen on my Arc S, I have to press the home button to wake up the phone drawn the security pattern on the dots, then find the camera icon in the list and then point and shoot, with the enhanced security on the phone this can add significant time to getting the phone ready and kind of spoils the ability to take a "quick shot".

If there were a way to hold the camera button for an extended time to make the phone open straight into a selected camera app which would allow you to just take the shot quickly and then re-lock the phone afterwards, this could allow the "quick shot" facility to be much more widely used. Alternatively perhaps the unlock screen could have a camera icon that would allow you to open the camera app from the unlock screen but then when closed would return you to the unlock screen.

If you wanted to then review the shots you would have to unlock the phone to proceed.

Hi,

I can confirm that the Xperia Arc S does have a quick launch camera which can be activated by pressing and holding the camera key for approximately 2 seconds. You will then feel a slight vibrate and the camera will open on the screen.

If your handset is running on ICS, you may not feel this vibrate and would need to hold the key down slightly longer.

This will only work when the screen on the handset is unlocked.

If this isn't happening on the handset, I'd suggest ensuring you are holding the key down fully.

I think you have missed my point.Whilst you are correct there is this function but you have to unlock the phone to use it.

My suggestion was, that if there was a way to go straight to the camera function from the lock page. If you are using the pictogram security on the phone and you are using a complicated pattern it could take a few seconds to unlock the phone before you can use the quickshot function. I have missed a number of those quickshot moments becaause you have to be super accurate on the security of the phone, before I can open the camera.

I suppose that I could use a simpler form of security but then wouldn't that compromise the security of the phone?

As I mentioned above if there could have been a way to open only the camera function to take a quick photo and then after the pic was taken it would return to the lock screen. You would have to unlock the phone after the moment to review the picture, but at least the moment had been captured. I understand the importance of the security of the phone but I couldn't see an issue of taking a photo with the phone, perhaps there could be a safe guard so that if there is no space on the device for anymore photos it would disable the functionality to avoid the app crashing into the phone and circumventing the security.

SiMac_ParBri,

if your Arc S is already on ICS you can directly open the camera from the lock screen. Slightly_smiling_Face

i think you aren't on ICS yet looking at the problem you are facing right now, which i recommend that you update your Arc S first to get that feature.

watch this video, at 1:01, you can see the quick snap feature,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz8qVtAgW_c&list=UUzdmx4sPYvcTXEWh_AtA9ew&index=2&feature=plcp

if you want to update your Arc S,look for your SI number here,

update using Sony Update Service,

http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/

but before you proceed, read these two links see if you are okay with it,

then you can decide to update to ICS or stay with GB Slightly_smiling_Face
