I just tested on 6.0, and you can override Airplane Mode after you turn it on. It was a little bit different back in Froyo - (but I think this was for tethering with Airplane Mode...) or they made it that way back then.

Select "Phone Info" >> Turn Off Radio
I was going to write up a guide about it because I think alot of people get confused about it and not many people know that you can turn on Wifi and Bluetooth after you turn on Airplane Mode - which ends up disabling radio, but then you're free to use WiFi.
You end up with something like the original iPod. Wifi Only, no SIM.

Actually that will work fine. Turn on Airplane mode (which does turn of WIFI), then turn the WIFI back on. Many airlines now have WIFI on the plane so this feature needs to be there. After that you are out of contact with the cell network but have WIFI. the messages will stop. I had this exact problem and this solution worked.
