Connecting to PC companion

Hi people have recently purchased the xperia t. Have yet to connect to PC companion anything i should be wary of. i.e. unwanted updates or should i back it up some how first? Just want to check before i make some sort of irreversible mistake. Any advice appreciated thanks.
