Computer does not recognize Xperia S

Since the official support from Sony takes years to send an answer I will try my luck here:

I'm using Windows Vista and I dont know why but my computer does not recognize my Xperia S anymore. Firstly it worked well PC companion tells me that the device could not be connected and I that shall restart my cell phone and conect it again. I tried that but it didn't help.

I would appreciate any kind of help.

Settings > applications > all > MTP app > clear data, see if it connects

Make usre your windows media player is up to date

See these threads

PC Companion don't find my Xperia S on Win7 64bit

     PC Companion 2.10.027 doesn't install

Allow full access to pc companion in firewall

Turn firewall and antivirus completely off and then try

I have done all of these and still the phone will not connect.

I think its got to be a problem with pc companion because the phone recognises its connected to a computer.

Thanks for the help Naabel.

"Settings > applications > all > MTP app > clear data  "

Do you mean on my cell phone? Because someway I couldn't find it...

"Allow full access to pc companion in firewall Turn firewall and antivirus completely off and then try"

Already tried both but it didn't help.

This is really a strange behavior. My PC recgonizes the Xperia S sometimes but sometimes no. At the moment is working, let's see for how  long! 😃

Additionally you can see the Applications and Services Logs from Window's Event Viewer. Since this error from the windows, I think the Event Viewer can give you more information about what caused for this error. Or else you can try with a never version of windows.

This thing is really starting to get annoying...

It worked fine for a few days but now I'm having the same problem again. The Windows Event Viewer shows me following error:

"A problem has occurred with one or more user-mode drivers and the hosting process has been terminated.  This may temporarily interrupt your ability to access the devices."

"The device LT26i (location Port_#0001.Hub_#0004) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash.  Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times.  Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem."

Another ideas?

Hello, I'm going to review what I tried:

- Restart the phone and PC

- Shut down the antivirus from the phone (AVG), from the PC (Avast) and Windows-Firewall

- Dowload and install/repair Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit from Microsoft, as described here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/242140-34-device-refuses-installed-please

- Run PC Companion in Compatibilty Mode for Windows XP, since I'm using Windows Vista

- Update the Java version

- Kill Spybot app in the background

- Reinstall Pc Companion

- Download latest version of Windows Media Player

- Connect the device into another USB port

- Try another USB cable

So I did all those steps but still the device is instable. It gets sometimes recognized and sometimes not. At the moment my PC recognized it, let's see for how long...

This is actually the first time I'm having trouble with a USB device on my PC and I guess it's all because this MTP-Mode. I couldn't see any advantages of this mode so far, only disadvantages like: You cannot save files from a program (i.e. mp3s from winamp) directly into the cell phone (?). You also cannot edit id3 tags directly from the phone and at last but not least the MTP mode is way slower than then normal USB mode, which is imo much better and uncomplicated or am I missing something about this MTP mode?

Connect your mobile to pc Go to control panel > device and printers> Xperia S ( must be shpwing with an error triange ? ) right click and select troubleshoot...it will ask you to install drivers, follow and see if you are able to make it

If you just want to transfer contentes from memory card to pc ( vice a versa) then use in MSC mode and it should work fine...

MTP mode is needed when you want to update and to see some more system files such as META DATA

I see that the problem may be due to Windows XP... it requires windows media player 10 or higher

Windows wista has built in support for MTP  and so do windows 7

Any othe laptop / pc having Windows7 to test with ?

Thanks for the help.

I already tried deleting the drivers on the device manager and also troubleshooting but it didn't help.

Can you tell me how to change the mode MTP to MSC? I checked the Configuration/Xperia on the my cell phone but only the MTP mode is available (?).

I'm using Vista x64 and having the problems with this system. I connected my phone on a Vista x32 and a Windows 7 x64 and it worked fine on both.
