Hi All
I am using my phone compass a lot. For e.g. sailing (maps) and for star glazing (Google Sky, SkyEye). I also like to see my maps positioned correctly when walking. This used to work very well.
Now my compass heading is off by 30-45 degrees in north and west directions, but zero in south or east. Same error is there in all tested apps, regardless of whether its a classic horizontal compass, or a 3D version where the phone may be held vertically in either landscape or portrait position. It thus doesn't look like a sensor problem, rather like an erratic algorithm. The compass settles unevenly, and may continue moving 10 degrees after movement of the phone stops.
After reading other stories about compass problems, I tried to disable/remove google play services. Voila, the compass was again spot on in all directions. I reinstalled the service, because the phone was pretty hysterical about missing the service. Lost accuracy of the compass again. This happened 2-3 times more, but now I can't even make it work by removing the service anymore. I have tried the test and calibration procedures to no avail.
I believe the problem came some time during fall of 2015. I would greatly appreciate if some of you could report back if you see a similar difference in compass readings when pointing in opposite directions. If not, my phone is off for repair!
Does anyone have other ideas of what I might try.
Thanks for all the good help found on the forum!
