The latest in a long line of faults with my compact Z5 is after completing a software update i only have a black sceen but the phone is functioning but i cannot enter the pin and the only way to power it off is volume up and power button.

Have tried repair on sony companion but still the same,

I have this phone 3 months and it has encountered numerous difficulties

Highly frustrated, Help please

You should stop by your Local support to get it inspected.

Thanks but they are not exactly local and paid a lot of money for this phone and need it for work

What you described seems more of a hardware issue than software, you could repair it with XC and see if that helps but I doubt it

I have the same problem. One morning when the alarm rang, I couldnt snooze it because the darn screen wouldn't light up!

So, problem is: screen not illuminated (totally black), and not registering finger inputs.

I had to reboot it with by holding volume + power buttons. After that, I started the phone, and you could tell that it starts by the vibration, and a minute later it starts making message sounds and the LED starts blinking. But screen is still totally black, and does not register finger inputs. It should make click sounds for entering PIN-code.

I left it to my non-authorized service store, wich had changed the display 2 months earlier (replacing original Sony display). He said that the display worked, but the "coil" was broken. It was like a LED that illuminated the screen and that he couldn't fix it. Apparently some surface soldered thing. Does that make any sense?

Talked to Sony support. The said "send it to us, but if you have had it repaired at a non authorized dealer, all warranties are lost"...

Now, a software repair via Sony companion is working in the background. I have low to none hope left.

I'll probably scrap this super fragile thing and buy a Samsung...
