Battery problem?

Hi, I am having issues with my Z3. I first noticed it yesterday. I work outside and it's been chilly lately, about 4 degrees Celsius. Anyway I left my phone in a cold wheelhouse of a boat for about 2 hours. I came back to use it and I noticed that my screen was ghosting ( leaving segments of the previous screen), upon seeing this I restarted my phone. My phone restarted, my battery said it was at 27% and then immediately it told me my battery was at 0% and started shutting down. I plugged my phone in, whilst turned off, and it started charging at 25%. I charged it to 35%, which took ages, then turned it on whilst still connected to a power supply. It stayed on and slowly charged. I wasn't able to give it a full charge but I got it to 72%. I monitored my phone on my way home and the charge level never dropped below 72%, and that was with me using it. When I got home I looked at the battery usage graph and it had flat lined at 72%. So once again I restarted my phone, upon restart it told me my battery was at 86% and with use, it discharged normally. I charged my phone over night and it was at 100% by the morning. I went to work and it seemed OK, until I left it in the wheelhouse again whilst I was working. I came back to use it and again, the screen was ghosting and the battery had frozen on a percentage. After a 30 seconds of me swiping the screen left and right the ghosting stopped. But the battery was telling me the same percentage so I checked the graph and it had flat lined again. It seems like when I am using it, it's fine. But if I leave it for more than half an hour or so the battery percentage freezes and I need to restart to find out how much battery I really have. I have had the phone for roughly 16 months and I still have 8 months of warranty left. I am running on Android 6.0.1

Do I need a new battery? Or is this a software issue that can be repaired by myself?

is this happening only when you leave it at that cold place? try not to do that to see if it works normaly, Batteries have recommended normal operating temparature. if they are too cold or too hot, the device might not pick up actual readings from the battery...

Thanks for your reply. I first noticed it happening when the phone was cold, but it seems to do it when I leave my phone for a while even at room temperature.
