Backup and restore problem

Hi,

I tried to restore a previous backup to test the feature in PC Companion. And the result is : It doesn't work. here is what I did :

- make a backup

- reset your Xperia S (using the repair function in PC Companion)

- restore your previous backup

- You have lost everything.

Tha backup is supposed to backup all your data, sms, music, contacts, parameters (display, ringtones...), bookmarks, etc. But nothing is restored. You are with a brand new Xperia S

Apps are on your Google account, so they can be restored, but what about all the modifications I made the screens, the sms, my ringtones, my bookmarks, my sync accounts (Exchange, Twitter, Facebook, Google, Foursquare, etc.)?

Have someone had the same problem?

They can backup their home screen for example? even with a third party app?

Just a screenshot, as you don't want to check the backup tool from PCC (just reinstalled it and phone recognized again)

and you are saying that everything was deleted on your phone? that's odd, PCC shouldn't delete anything from your screens

No, it doesn't delete anything, but it doesn't restore anything either, that's the problem!

it used to delete everything so it's an improvement, perhaps a Sony Moderator can check this thread and forward your suggestions to sony's developers

I have the same issue also... if you backup then delete and restore stuff comes back (but not all) If you do a Firmware update/ Replace your phone you first need to mak a backup with your new phone before the restore works...

But even then as Kinder says while Contacts, Texts, Photos and Music is restored it would be nice if settings like: Wallpapers, Alarms, Contact photos, Ringtones, Account settings, Folders and shortcuts would also be restored.

Why should we install 3rd party software when Sony provide a solution which  on the face of it says it backs up just what we want...

I sympathize with Kinder.. as I am pulling my hair out since last night over this very issue!

The Backup/Restore option of Sony PCC specifically says when you want to backup:

" [checkbox] Settings (e.g. Time & Date, Sound, Language, Privacy Settings)

[checkbox] Other (data from downloaded applications and games)"

I checked BOTH when I backed up! Now you would think that something like Home screen arrangements (widgets, icons) would be stores SOMEWHERE in such a 'specific' backup. But oh no, to my surprise, I restored after hard reset, thankfully got back a list of apps from Google Play to re-download and that's it.

Again, uliwooly.. I respect that you are a very helpful person on this forum, but what is so hard to understand that we do not care about the ACTUAL apps, nor the images, nor the mp3s or whatever videos are on the phone. JUST all we want back is the setting up of every tiny detail in every piece of every app, which takes weeks to re-do and is also very hard for anyone's memory to record exactly!

And again, stop recommending other apps.. we know they exist, but right now they are usless because they will never be able to decode the Sony PCC backup file!

So disappointing... So annoying! How can I remember what I did with every app? Or those damn POP3 Email settings.. AHHHH.. nightmare!

That is NOT supported by Sony at all, if you want something like that or close to that you need to root your phone and use a third party backup app and that might not even backup all the settings, what's so hard to understand about that?

it does not say anywhere that your homescreen will be backup as it is, since the homescreen it's an app itself and the data on the apps it is NOT backed up

if you have passwords and settings that you don't want to lose you might want to spend sometime on the market looking for apps that will back them up, or check with android forums and see what Android is capable of and what is not

OK - here is my angle. I am not particularly tech savvy. I expect technology to work for me, I don't work for it! Sony resorted to taking my phone back and re-formatting it to fix a software issue. I phoned Sony to check and double check how to back up my data. Despite being told it wasn't necessary, I insisted they tell me how to back up all my data (including my phone contacts) somewhere other than on the Google account. So I thought I had it backed up on my SD card. My SD card died in the two weeks it was not in my phone - oh - good thing it is also on the Googloe account! Now I can't get any data off the Google account where the Sony tech told me it was absolutely safe! This is RIDICULOUS!!
