What is obvious for me Sony is doing what apple did before they are trying to decrease quality of photos in their old phones update by update. Even they decreased performance of camera app. I have compared too many photos on noughat with photos in Oreo and I'm sure it is worse far worse than before. Then I tried third party camera applications. All of them are far superior. How can this be happening? Before that I tried other apps and Local Camera was the best and now I should say it is the worst. Even they have changed the Picture Saving Progress. On noughat you took a picture then th picture was saved after that it tried to process HDR but now it applies HDR on the air and the phone hangs after every 23MP photo. Don't tell me it is the same I'm semi pro photographer and I mind capturing photos by my phone.
The devs are here on this forum. If they think it is valid feedback, then I'm sure they'll pass it along. If, however, you believe in your degredation of the camera quality theory, then this would be a business decision and therefore reaching the devs would be futile.
However I disagree about quality before and after. I'm also an ex semi-pro and we are all entitle to our opinion. Perhaps your could evidence your claim with some shots that demonstrate it?
I also do not see the value of photographing at 23mp on an aperture the size of a flies bum. I understand that Sony intend the camera to be used at 8mp.
1) I edit photos so higher resolution means better quality and if you resize a 23MP to lower resolution you would get more details and better quality as you know!
2) Install a thirdparty free camera app and compare quality of 8MP to 8MP with a pc or laptop. I can do it here later if it was neccessary!
3) Image processing before was like you capture a photo and it was saved but couldn't be opened while the camera was processing it in the background process but now when you capture a photo your phone hangs for 5 minutes till it save that photo.
4) This phones resolution is 23MP and it was when I was buying I never knew sony meant it to be a 8 MP camera phone!
5) I love this phone and photo quality specially on noughat But ofcourse I know what I am writing about right now!
Camera discussions are always quite lively as a lot of things are subjective there. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder .
Just a small addon on this thread, it might be good to open a thread posting photos (in your case from Nougat and Oreo) so everyone can compare. Unedited photos would be prefered I think. Not only that, others could show their work too. Thing is, some folks , pros or not, have a natural eye when it comes to these things, so thread like this would be a good learning step. Many times I used to think some camera is not good, until someone shows me what they can do with it.
That doesn't at all mean that your findings are incorrect, but things are best solved with facts, especially when it comes to photos,in a way.
It is what I believe almost any phone on xda had: Post your <insert smartphone> pics thread . Always liked those.
Wanting as many pixels as possible for editing purposes is a valid reason. I don't do much post processing... especially not on my phone shots.
As has been mentioned above, it's best to present some evidence to back up your claim. Perhaps even an IQ / resolution test?
One cannot judge photo quality.
What can be done is compare. Like you mentioned the different camera apps. Or maybe one smart phone with another.
Try to objectivate it for instance with this test pattern.
A smart phone is for snapshots, a DSLR is for beautiful sharp pictures.
I do agree however that the time needed between pushing the button and the actual photo taking, as well as the time needed for storing the picture is very important when taking snapshots.
You can enhance swiftness of the camera
