won't startup until tapped on bottom

No I'm not kidding. I've got the PCG-GRX316MP and when I press the power button, the led's light up as normal, the cd drive does it's usual little twitch and then nothing. The led power light remains on, but the screen is blank (no viao logo appears, the screen doesn't appear to powerup).
Whilst it's "on" if I tap the bottom of the case all over, hold down the power key till it turns off again, and then turn it back on, it powers up as normal. (sometimes it takes a few goes at doing this though). Once it has booted up it runs just fine, unless you have to restart and sometimes you have to go through the whole process again.
The thing that really annoys me is that the vaio laptop I had before this one (different model), did exactly the same thing! And neither have been dropped, abused or anything like that. I even sent the old one off to sony to be repaired, it came back fine for about a week and started doing it all over again.
Not only that but both laptops had upgraded RAM, however they both started to see only one of the slots, (ram is fine as I've swapped them over, tried them on their own, and both modules work but only in one slot).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, but I won't be buying another Vaio again, which is a shame because other than these problems I love the computers.

James

P.S. I don't particularly want to send it off to sony either if I can help it, as they take ages, the laptop is now about 6 months out of warranty, and last time I sent the other laptop to them, they didn't send back one of my ram modules, and it was still faulty!

Yes apparently the RAM slots are not well soldered on - which is a real shame.

It's a great machine, a bit more care and attention from Sony and it would have been a massive winner.

Not sure what you can do about your model. Hopefully you can have it repaired locally.

I have a GRX 416SP which has recently started behaving just as the aforementioned 316 - fails to start, only one slot reports, etc.
Having just tried the 'tap' fix.... it works ! Could I assume then that this dodgy soldering problem is a common fault on GRX machines?

Yes it's very common, in fact, some people in America have been trying to sue Sony over this, no outcome has been published.

well at least I know it's not just me and I'm glad the tappy "fix "worked for you handyandy. The really annoying thing for me about all of this is that it happened to me on a completely different model of Vaio before I got this one too, so it seems the problem is not just limited to the 316 (can't remember which model I had before but I do remember it was one of the FX series. And I really don't see why I should pay sony to fix a design flaw on their products. I'll be interested to find out if the people sueing sony over this got anywhere with their case, if so it might well be an option I will take.

cheers

Yes I'd love to know how it all went on.
