memory for vgn-n11m

please can someone help me.
i own a sony vaio vgn-n11m.
i would like to upgrade the memory.
the spec online seems to say it takes ddr2 533mhz.
i took the memory chip out of the laptop to double check - turns out it currently has 667mhz (type = hyinx 512mg, ddr2 667mhz).

1) can someone please confirm what memory should be used with my laptop?
2) on ebay there are 200pin chips that state they are for apple notebooks - should these be compatible?
thanks in advance..

Hi

Welcome to Club vaio,

According to Sony-style your N11M uses DDR2 667 SDRAM So-Dimm modules

If you go to Cruical.com and run the Crucial System Scanner it will automatically analyse your computer memory information and suggests an upgrade that's guaranteed compatible..

thanks for the info - 667mhz as stated on sony style matches the pre installed memory. however, i think the laptop only requires 533 mhz. hence, i assume my laptop cannot take advantage of the 667mhz speed, correct? if that is the case, why does sony ship the laptop with 667mhz memory?

from sony webiste (http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-N11M%2FW&site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+...

Memory Speed (MHz) 533.0
Memory Type DDR2 SDRAM (1x512MB)
Max. Memory (MB) 2048.0
Memory Size (MB) 512.0

conflicting information.....

Hi

If you click on the accessories tab on the page you supplied it will show the Sony modules that are compatible with your Vaio..

VGP-MM1GA
Type 1GB
Memory Type SODIMM DDR2 SDRAM
Memory Speed (MHz) 667.0
Module speed grade DDR2

VGP-MM512M
Type 512
Memory Type SODIMM DDR2 SDRAM
Memory Speed (MHz) 667.0
Module speed grade DDR2

What does the Crucial scanner recommend..?

On the radio the other day I heard something about Crucial's tenth aniversary deals, might be worth looking at

hi,
thank you for your replies.

the crucial system scan found my computer, but did not let me proceed with the exact model - i had to manually select it. the vgn-n11m model did not appear. the closest i could find was vgn-n110g. i guess these are not the same?

i have built PC's from scratch in the past - i am finding it frustrating not being able to find the exact memory required for my pc on the sony website.

i think the answer is that my PC is designed for 533 mhz, but has been shipped with a 667 mhz chip which is comaptible. in other words, i can probably purchase another 1gb of either 533 or 667 and it will be fine.

hopefully someone can confirm this for me...
thanks,

Hi eilidhbee,

As Sony recommend SODIMM DDR2 SDRAM 667 Mhz and your N11M came with the same module installed, then I would stick with that, if you wish to get official clarification then you will need to to contact Vaio-Link ..

It could very well be that the mention in the Memory specs of 533 Mhz is a error..

At the end of the day I guess the choice is yours..
