Hello,
I've received the notification that there is a software update (6.1.B.0.544) available for my Xperia P. The instructions say I have to use the Sony PC Companion software to do this. Whenever I try the software crashes my PC and the phone doesn't get updated. My PC is running Windows XP (SP3), has Java (JRE7) and I have disabled my antivirus (Kaspersky) and firewall. This is what happens:
1. I connect the phone to PC via USB.
2. PC Companion software (PCC) notices the phone and says there's an update available.
3. I click on 'Update'
4. PCC opens 'Phone Software Update' window with 4 steps (1. Start, 2. Prepare, 3. Update, 4. Finish). 1. Start is highlighted and it says my personal data will be kept, it should take around 30 minutes to update, I need an internet connection, and the software will be updated to 6.1.B.0.544 (from 6.0.B.1.564)
5. I click on 'Accept'
6. PCC opens '2. Prepare' window, states it's preparing the computer for the update and cycles through intialising and preparing stages.
7. PCC then says it is checking my phone and my phone switches off.
8. The software continues to be 'checking the phone' for several minutes after the phone powers off, then presents a screen displaying a series of steps to 'prepare the phone for the update': 1. Disconnect the USB cable from phone and computer, 2. Make sure the battery is at least 50% charged (it is), 3. turn off the phone and wait 5 seconds (the phone's already off though...), 4. Connect the USB to the computer, and 5. Press and hold the volume down button while plugging the USB into the phone.
9. I follow the steps above.
10. The phone shows the Sony logo then just displays the battery charging image and goes to sleep. The green LED comes on.
11. Nothing happens for a few minutes.
12. My computer hangs - completely freezes except for the mouse. The clock stops, I can't click on any buttons including the Windows Start Menu, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. I've tried leaving this for 45mins and there's no change. The only way to recover is to press the PC's reset or off buttons.
I've tried several times now - with and without my antivirus on, updated the java I had installed (I was on JRE6). To call this frustrating would be an understatement.
How do I make this work?

The thread now says this is assumed answered - this has still NOT BEEN ANSWERED! None of the suggestions work.
I'm really disappointed with Sony on this.

Solved! Go to Solution.
I've got the same problem with my work laptop. When I tried to update thru PPC or SUS, it froze. I tried on another laptop with Windows Xp SP3 and it worked. Try to find a computer with a fresh operating sistem (or try a reinstall on your computer). My work computer operating system is not that fresh
1) Make sure that you have the phone switched off long enough before you connect to the USB while holding the "Volume DOWN" button.
2) Try other USB ports (first time can fail as Windows installs driver)
Just my 2 cents .....

I'm happy to report that several computers later (yes, really!) I have found one that is able to do the update. Interestingly it was running Vista while the others were all XP, so maybe it's an issue with how the software works on Windows XP.
Hi - I cannot get my Xperia P to update.
I've read all of this thread and most of it goes right over my head
Can anyone tell me what to do to make this happen? Basically it never gets to 'DETECT' (of the potential update process).
Do I need to have my phone OFF during the process? This is what someone has suggested here.
Also ... how do I turn the volume off (as is also suggested here)? Why is this necessary?
Many thanks indeed for any help about this in advance
When you connect your phone for the update, you will be prompted to press volume down key.All the steps you need to follow are provided by pc companion during the process.
