It could be just incompatibility after the update.If you contact xperia care,they will tell you to use only sony earphones.
Try to clear data for smart connect in settings-apps-all.
Anytime.
There is but it's complicated - It involves rooting and altering the headphone code which most have if they have volume control and the ability to answer calls etc
For your consideration here - Tested on Z ultra but it is claimed the procedure will work on other models
