Screen capture on Android V4

I have tried the hold power button + vol down simulatanously function and nothing happens. My cell phone is a Sim Free unit & being used in the UK. It worked on the previous version of Android but no longer does. So what are my options please other than resetting it to the factory default?

some user here tried power and volume up, maybe you could give it a try..

you must press both keys for 1-3 seconds or until it captures the screen

Yes have tried the volume up key sequence and the volume down sequence for the 1- 3 secs and there has been no indication of success I've even checked the SD card & camera memory but no image. Looks like I will have to pay to download an app (the free ones are rubboish) but with problems with 'rooted' an 'un roted' models it could prove to be a waste of time but will would love to know if anyone else which may come across this post has had a similar problem. Thanks for your reply.

Press and hold power button and volume down button exactly at the same time and  hold them there until you take a screenshot
