Predictive text in SMS - can it be changed / switched off?

Can anyone please tell me how to get the predictive text in SMS to either switch off, or to actually behave in a sensible manner? When I start typing a word in an SMS, it brings up a list of suggested words underneath the text box that it thinks I may be typing. If I see the correct word I can click on it & it is inserted into the SMS - FINE SO FAR. Let me be clear; this is very useful - I would be happy to keep this function, if this was ALL it did! However:

1) IF I do NOT select one of the 'suggested words' - because the word I have typed is correct and is the word I want to use; it will NOT just accept the word I've typed, even if this is a perfectly correct English word - instead it replaces it with some nonsense it has chosen from the list! Or, it changes it into a totally different word.

2) Again, if I do not select one of the suggested words, because my word is only 3 letters & I've already typed it; it changes the first letter of the word to a capital letter - WHY would I want a capital letter in the middle of a sentence?! This is not even correct English.

3) I often type SMS in French, and in these cases do not use any of the 'suggested words'; but EVERY word of two letters - e.g. 'le', 'la' etc - gets capitalized. WHY?!

I would really REALLY love to find the settings so I can change this, as it seems to have been deliberately set up to make these stupid, grammatically incorrect and pointless changes to words that are typed, whether I want it or not. It seems to have been designed by someone with very little understanding of English, in fact! I have searched everywhere on the phone but there seem to be no options to change any of the SMS settings.

Before the last software update I am sure it was not doing this; if I typed a word it would leave it alone unless I chose one of the words that appeared below the text.

Phone details: Xperia S; software: ICS version 4.0.4

settings > language and settings > personalization guide > and make sure to select

I only want upper case and accented letters automatically

this way you will get word suggestions but it wont replace the words unless you tap on them.

also make sure to select both languages French and English that way you can switch back and forward between word suggestions.

Thank you - but this is exactly the first place I looked, but there is nothing like these options in my phone! All I get is:

- 'Language and input' - nothing but 'spelling correction', & a list of languages. See screenshot attached. 'Keyboard & input methods' has nothing underneath it other than what you can see in this screenshot.

I cannot see personalization guide'? I seem to recall having something like this before my phone was sent away to be fixed & the software was updated, but now there is nothing at all; the only option is to change the language, and I cannot select both English & French; if I select one, the other one switches off.

my bad I shold've gave you all the steps

settings > language & input > xperia keyboard >  personalization guide > next > I only want upper case adn accented letters automatically > next > add or change languages > select french and english.
