Current firmware version: 6.0.B.3.162
I connect my smartphone to PC via USB cable, and PC Companion tells me that there is new firmware update available (6.0.B.3.184). It downloads the update, goes through Preparing state, and turns the smartphone off. After a while it instructs me to disconnect USB cable from the device, wait 5 seconds, and connect the cable back again while pressing Volume Down button on the phone. I do it... and nothing happens. PC Companion checks something again, and tells me to repeat the procedure. The phone stays turned off, firmware update process does not start.
The phone was bought yesterday, it has factory settings.

I've got this problem again when trying to update my phone to ICS. Fortunately Sony technical support at last has sent me letter describing the procedure for updating Sola using PCC (yep, Sony tech support is ve-e-e-ery slow, but at least they answer after a while). I've followed the instructions, and the update process has finished successfully at last.
It seems that the key step is as follows:
Clear the database of MTP application. From the applications menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Tap on ‘All’ in the top bar > then find the MtpApp and Tap ‘Clear Data’.
Ignore the warning and confirm the data deletion. After that, follow the instructions displayed by PCC.
that's not ICS (Android 4.0.4), try with SUS instead of PCC

Uliwooly,
Standalone update service does not help too. All is the same: I select my smartphone model, the wizard asks me to disconnect USB cable from PC, turn off the phone, wait 30 seconds, and connect USB cable back again while pressing Volume Down button. I do it, and nothing happens. I've even tried to turn the phone on while holding Volume Down button, and still no effect.
Initially I tried to update the device using my home PC (Vista), and now I use my office workstation (Windows 7).
It seems that the phone is supposed to reboot into some special firmware update mode. However it doesn't.
that's PCC not SUS, try SUS check the link above

Uliwooli,
First, if PCC cannot update Sola firmware, why it tries? And why Sola user manual tells me to use PCC to update firmware if it is impossible?
Second, I repeat, last time I've used SUS, not PCC.
Anyways this question is closed. I've managed to update Sola using the smartphone interface and Wi-Fi link.
SUS won't ask you to turn off then on your phone
