Can't seem to close the Music player beyond "Pause", suspect it's still chewing battery. Apologies if this is a dumb question but I didn't know how to anser my first incoming call so you see where I'm a comin from.

simple just long press the MENU button and slide music to the side, voila, done

yes it does run in the background, see running apps in app manager.
Hmmm, thought so, if I kill it in "apps manager" seem I have to reboot to get it back, zat rite?
if you kill it in apps manager, you can still run it but it would take awhile to load up, or it may have issues. the os keeps it in the background to be able to execute it fast. if you really want to see what's using your battery try looking at battery use in the settings.
Heck, there's so much other stuff lurking there, I'm gonna forget about it, I'll start worrying when the battery goes flat.

....yeah, but remember do not let your battery go to 0% though, or you may get nasty issues. 
and with the Xperia S you can use other music players and take advantage of the equalizer and the lockscreen control
