message notification tones

Maybe I'm being dumb, maybe not but is there any way to have different tones for different types of incoming message.

I used to have different sound for text message, email, facebook alerts etc

Yes, open each app > settings > notification > notification sound

I would like to set personal notifcation

tones for text messages, not just for calls. I would like to have different tones for messages from different contacts - don't see how to do this, only see how to do it for calls.

Yes,that is not possible for different contacts.You could search google play for an app.
