Try reinstalling PC Companion and if problem still remains you should check if you can repair the phone software.

If your PC can't even detect your phone for software repair try another PC to rule out the problem.

Were you able to perform a software repair?
how do i do the software repair???? can u provide me some link or instructions regarding software repair
the link you provided me was the one for downloading sony pc companion (www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion)
waiting for your reply...
If you try to update your phone using PC Companion it will tell you that your phone is up to date but will give you an option to repair your device if you are having issues with it.
The other alternative is to use Sony Update Service (SUS) downloadable from this link...
Update service - Sony Smartphones (Global UK English)
It will also give you an option to repair your phone.
well Johan and Suze ......finally i get the option to repair the software! but they ask to backup phone memory before doing so.....since i cant connect phone to pc at the moment, i am unable to do the backup....i dont mind losing the apps i installed, but will i lose any important preinstalled apps/ programs... is it safe to go ahead without backing up phone memory?????
waiting for your reply to repair software and thanks a lot for the support you are showing!
You shouldn't lose any preinstalled apps, the software reads your device details and you will get the update appropriate to your phone.
You will lose things like SMS and Contacts/Calendar, maybe bookmarks if they are important to you. You can use an app to back up your SMS and you can sync your contacts and calendar with Google to make sure that once you sign in again with your Google account you can sync them back to your phone.
Your apps will be in the My Apps section of Play Store on your phone and then swipe to right to left and it will show a list of all the apps you had downloaded before so you can easily reinstall them.
There is a programme called My Phone Explorer FJ Software Development that will allow you to back up Contacts, Calendar and Messages. You just need to ensure USB debugging is ticked... Settings>Applications>Development and its the top option. I like this programme so that I can keep a copy of my phone on my PC even tho I do sync with google.
Hope it helps. Let us know how you get on.
YO YO!!!! thanks a lot to Johan and Suze!!
