It is possible that sensor might "produced" by Sony, doesn't mean that it should have same quality as Sony's own camera's sensors..

Say like..: Apple gives a contract to Sony to produce 500,000 sensors, for their 5 mp or 8 mp camera. OK ?

now, apple also gives some secret speciafications (set, tested and registered by Apple) to Sony about the sensors, which comes in contract of production with a legal terms that "Sony can never use/produce the same specs, which is already registered by Apple"

some like Resolution, Claimed 35mm equiv., Measured 35mm equiv., Aperture, Macro coverage etc, plus overall picture quality also depends on phone processor and its build UI.

So, here the limitations comes, Sony has their own standards, like wise Apple has their own.. doesn't matter, who produce it. may be tomorrow, the sensor can be prodce by Samsung or Someother company.

if sony has to produced for apple , why would apple say something like this " i have a technology , and i will make better use of it with yours " why would aple tell sony about that secret specifications in the first place,,,

that only be true if apple requested an specific sensor, if they design it and/or worked together to create one, not if sony has released already

if they worked together , they would have shared the technology , obviously...

Have you been in manufacturing industries... ?? i guess no.

a set up for a specific product with some large number of production capacity is not an easy thing, many companies use to do the same... almost all.

always some parts of a X companies product has been produced by some other X company, always... I have seen it, well let me tell you,

I have been worked for General Motors One of the manufacturing plant, and still will u believe what i have seen there, A GM car is not fully made of it, many parts comes from diff. companies, (some from same product field) (same like Apple & Sony)...

So, its possible..
