My Sony charger is rated at 850mA, so 1A is enough so as not to overload the charger.
The voltage, however needs to be 5V. I'm guessing it isn't.
I've used a Kindle charger with no problems, but if in doubt it's best to stick with the stock charger.
Bear in mind that if you fry your phone with a 3rd party charger, it almost certainly won't be covered by the warranty.
