Call mute button

Quite often when I make a call with my X8 I put the phone up to my ear and the mute button is activated so the mouthpiece becomes deactivated. I assume part of my ear is touching the button on the screen, what a silly place to put the button! Can this button be deactivated? The only way i can stop this happening is by putting the call on speaker which is not always convenient.

Please make sure the top section of the phone is against your face as this should activate the proximity sensor and disable/black out the screen so that this does not happen.
