hello I have a problem co my xperia z3 compact, the screen overlay is a problem can not disable overlap as I can fix that problem
Hi corporacion,
Welcome to the community,
Sorry to hear about the Overlay error message. I have supplied some instructions below that will help resolve this. First try pausing the Overlay feature of the application directly.
To pause the overlay feature of an app
If the above does not help, then you will need to disable the Draw over other apps feature.
To disable the Draw over other apps feature
Complete the setup of the application permission.
Let us know how you get on.
Hi Jake, thanks for the information, unfortunately it hasn't worked on my Z3 Compact. I am unable to change any permissions or change whether the screen overlay is allowed or not, all boxes are greyed out. This only happened with the .291 update. Is it possible to roll back to the previous issue?
Cheers
Regards
dajand
First of all the navigation buttons don't work after last update....reading thru the forum it was a known problem and the workaround was downloading an app (back button). Ok that worked but now I am getting the message 'Screen overlay detected' - tried everthing to get rid of this but nothing works. Ended up wiping the phone to factory settings and as the navigation buttons still don't work - reinstalled the back button app. Still the same problem Grrrrr What now?
Hi @TDNZ,
I am sorry to hear about this.
I do recommend you contact your Local support team to repair your handset, but if you just want a work around for the overlay issue, please see below:
The message Screen overlay detected appears when an installed app, that has the permission to draw over other apps, is running in the background. When the message appears, you have to either pause the overlay feature of the relevant overlay app, or disable the Draw over other apps feature for the overlay app, that is, for the app that has the Draw over other apps feature enabled.
If you can't identify which app use the overlay, you can use Safe mode to exclude 3rd party apps. If any downloaded apps are causing a conflict with the phone, your handset will work correctly in this mode.
There are two ways to start the phone in Safemode.
The first method of starting the phone in Safemode is to press and hold the silver power button until the option to “Power off” displays on the screen. When this is displaying, press and hold on the “Power off” option on the screen and after around 2-3 seconds the phone will ask to reboot into Safemode.
The second method of starting the phone in Safemode if you have difficulty with the first is to reboot the phone and when the phone is booting up press and hold the down volume until “Safemode” is displayed on the screen.
Once the phone is in Safemode use the phone as usual to test if there is any change.
To exit Safemode once the device has been tested simply reboot the phone.
If the phone is working correctly in this mode, this indicates there is a third party app causing a conflict with the device.
When you use an overlay or filtering app such as F.lux, Twilight or CF.Lumen, the message Screen overlay detected can appear. The only time this message is shown is when you download a new app or try to use a new feature in an app you’ve already installed. When you use a new app for the first time or try to access a new feature, Android 6.0 will ask for your permission. The Screen overlay detected message is there to stop these permission requests from appearing until you’ve shut down or paused the overlay app.
The permission Draw over other apps allows an app to display on top of other apps you're using, and may interfere with your use of the interface in other apps, or change what you think you're seeing in other apps.
To avoid the message Screen overlay detected from appearing pause or close the overlay feature of an app. If this doesn't solve the issue, you should turn off the Draw over other apps feature for of the relevant overlay app.

I have done all what you suggest here (apart from paying one of your service centres) before the major of resetting to factory settings. Unfortunately in safe mode I cannot navigate as the navigation buttons don't work (this is a problem for alot of Sony users, which you just say take to the service centre. I do not agree as its only become a problem since the update, as many say here) The only way I can navigate is using the floating app 'back button'.
Draw over app function can be set on or off....no difference. When I go to photos and app permissions... the buttons are greyed out so you have no choice.
This makes the phone pointless - All this info you have provided is available on the internet, which I have gone thru.
I am sorry to hear that.
Based on the information you have provided I highly recommend you contact your Local support team to arrange an assessment. If your device is within the warranty period for your region then there may be no costs to this.
No its two years old. And I believe from all the complaints here, it is Sony's updates/android that is at fault. It is not only me with this problem, otherwise there would not be all the information available on the internet that I tried before doing the dreaded reformat/reset of the phone.
Due to the fact my navigation buttons are not working and now a 'screen overlay detected' message comes up when I try to access my contacts, photos, apps etc and nothing has fixed this (also an issue with many users here!). I have left the Sony family to join a competitor, So long Sony!
