Z3 repeatedly falls due to slippery back

I have an issue with the z3 which I believe is a design flaw.

The glass back, while very nice, is so smooth that it just won't stay on many surfaces. I've put it on a book on a table, and it falls off within a minute. I have it plugged in overnight on a wooden bedside table, and it slowly slides off onto the floor. I even put it on a cushion on the sofa and it slides off that as well.

I've compared each scenario with a Samsung Galaxy S3, with a smooth plastic back, and an iPhone 5s with a smooth metal back, and neither of them slide at all.

If I was doing anything odd like tilting the surface or putting it on an already sloping table, I wouldn't complain. But I think this is going to happen to many people. I've seen comments about this on reddit, xda-developers, gsm arena and on a review on The Register website. The ease at which the phone slides and falls is, In my opinion, totally unreasonable, and ought to be addressed by Sony because their design has caused a problem which could so easily lead to the phone smashing, simply because it's been plugged it in to charge - a problem which doesn't happen with two other phones I've tried, and I doubt happens with most others.

Yes it's easy to buy a case but I don't see why I should have to spend more, simply to stop my phone falling on the floor, and which would hide the design of what is otherwise a beautiful phone.

Does anyone else have this problem? Ideally I'd like Sony to provide, free of charge, some kind of case (or other creative design) to fix this, because the ease at which is slips is pretty ridiculous! If any Sony designers read this I'd love to know your thoughts. And if anyone else recognises this problem please make yourselves known.

The first thing anyone should do after buying a £500+ phone is to buy a cover and apply a screen protector. If you don't then I say tough luck

Just being totally honest and straight forward...

Just buy a chap soft gel case from Amazon.

It isn't Sony's responsibility on how you handle your phone.

The same goes for when you buy a new car, the manufacturer or dealership isn't going to cover neglect or misuse... how you handle your phone is up to you. If you don't protect it and it gets damaged, if it is covered under warranty, great, if not, sorry.

The options are

1.to buy a good looking expensive phone and quickly cover it with ugly robber/silicone case for extra money

2.to buy Samsung S5 Active

I have already suffered a smashed screen due to this. Even after noting the slippery nature of the phone and making sure to only ever place it in the centre of large flat surfaces if not cradled securely by some thing. But even then, the vibration from someone else phone was enough for it to make its way to the edge and fall onto the tiled floor.
Thanks for insurance... Cases weren't even available at the time.

I have my phone for 4 days. It's very slippery. I left on a table and it fall down. I have damage at the volume buttons and at the top of the phone. I am very disappointed with this phone (also I have a light bleak at the right corner, I called sony service and tell me to repair it for 10 days -this is a manufacturing problem and should give me a new one but here in Greece..) so i am about to buy an iphone. Good luck sony, now I know why the sales are very low.

I've been very frustrated by this issue, sure, the phone is very elegant but it has absolutely zero friction, it's almost impossible even to hold it in the hand. I too have put it on numerous surfaces only to find it minutes later on the floor, thankfully it hasn't broken. Ive since taken delivery of the Ringke Fusion back cover and this has solved the problem but the phone loses a fair bit of elegance and visual impact once sheathed.

When I first took the film off the back of the Z3 I was amazed at how frictionless it was.  I mentioned to a colleague that I would have to be really careful holding it because it could slip through you fingers.  I never thought it would just slide off a desk without the phone ringing or vibrating.

My copper Z3 phone slid off a desk onto a tiled floor and broke the day after I bought it.

As well as the cracked glass, the phone doesn't work so it is back with Sony for repair at my expense.

This is a product which, when used in the normal way, breaks.

Having read all the comments on the Z3 I was comforted to hear other owners encountered the same fate. It happened to me 3 times. I didn't understand in the beginning why 3 times I found my Z3 on the carpet instead of on the bed or the side table where I left it !!! I thought I was careless and didn't pay enough attention how I placed my Z3. Now I know this piece of beauty have her own mind!!! What can we say, and who can we turn to?

Had the Z3 just over a month and noticed it managing to slip off every surface known to man (normally just onto a soft carpet).  Now it's slipped right out of my hands onto the pavement and smashed, and O2 want £250 to repair it.  Not a happy bunny.
