Hi,
I have an Xperia Z5 Compact and have the problem where an echo is heard by the other caller/receiver each time. Has anyone with this problem upgraded their phone to Nougat and has this version fixed the echo problem.
Can this problem be fixed by software or is it a hardware fix?
Any help will be appreciated.
Hi @Moraki, welcome to our community!
I'm sorry to hear about this, must be very annoying for the counterpart.
It's hard to say if this is caused by hardware, software or network before we have done some troubleshooting.
I'd recommend that you start with testing the microphone when you are outside of a call. To test the microphone, go to Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone. Can you hear the echo when the recording is being played in the second part of the test?
You can also change the preferred network type in your phone and see if this only occurs when using 3G to make calls and not when using GSM/2G.
To change the network mode, go to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > GSM/2G Only and make a few calls and see if the counterpart is still hearing an echo.
Let me know how it went!
Hi Jonas,
The echo can be heard by the other person I am talking with. It occurs when in LTE and 3G network modes. I have also changed USIM / carrier whicg didnt make a difference.
I did the microphone diagnostic test which passes without any echo.
I have read on the forum that afew users resolved the issue by having the primary and secondary mirophones replaced. Would this be the only option to fix this problem?
Hi again!
Since you have already tried with different SIM cards I'd recommend that you perform a software repair using Xperia Companion.
This will delete all data from the internal storage in your phone and reinstall the latest available software, so we can see if this is caused by the software in your phone. Since data is being deleted, creating a backup using Xperia Companion before starting with the repair process is recommended!
If there is no change after the software repair your phone needs to be examined by a trained technician at an authorized service centre. Your Local support team will gladly arrange a repair for you so get in touch with them for further assistance with this.
If you have any questions about warranty, local service routines, consumer laws and so forth they are experts on your market and will help you get all of these questions answered.

Make: Sony
Range: Xperia Z5
Mode: E6653
Android version: 7.1.1
Build: 32.4.A.0.160
When I make a call or when i receive a call the receiver hears their voice is being repeated. Its very upsetting as many of them disconnect the call because of the poor quality.
Please advise what is the best way to remove this echo issue. Here is my phone current settings...
Call Settings:
- Smart call handling (off)
- Slow talk (off)
- Equaliser (Normal)
- Accessibility -> Hearing aids (off)
Sound:
- Audio settings (all turned off)
- Accessory settings -> Automatic optimisation (off)
- Accessory settings -> Mic sensitivity (Medium)
Also, i was trying to follow osome of the steps mentioned on this link: https://www.technobezz.com/how-to-fix-bad-sound-quality-during-calls-on-sony-xperia-z5/ but i couldn't find 'audio enhancement' or 'voice suppression' feature on the phone.. Please advise.
Hi @zagoo2000, sorry to hear about this.
Have you had the chance to try any of the troubleshooting in this thread? If you haven't, I would recommend that you start with testing the microphone outside of a call. You can do so in the inbuilt test in the phone which can be found in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone.
Do you have any echo when listening to the recording?
Let me know how it went!
Hi Jonas, thanks for coming back to me. I have done the test that you suggested and there is no echo actually when i listen to this recording.
Whether i call someone or someone calls me, the other person hears the echo. Let me know what else i can do please.
I love the phone buts its getting annoying because i have never had such issue since i started using cell phones. I especially don't expect from a flagship phone like this
Please advise.
Hi again, sorry for the late reply.
Just to make sure that this not related to the network, try making a few calls when the phone is set to GSM/2G only. You can change the preferred network type in Settings > More > Mobile networks > Preferred network type > GSM/2G Only. Remember to change back to LTE/4G after you are done testing otherwise browsing the Internet will be pretty slow.
Should there be no change when trying a different network mode, try performing a software repair using Xperia Companion. This will however delete all data stored on the internal storage so creating a backup using Xperia Companion before you start with the repair is advised.
Keep me posted!
Hi Jonas, these are the 'Preferred network type' i have got available on my phone:
I was using the 1st before but for the past couple of days i'm using 3rd. The echo issues persists. However, i haven't started the software repair using Xperia Companion yet. I want to make sure all the other options are exhausted first.
