Xperia Z3 won't play any video

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 D6653, running OS 5.0.2.
I am unable to play video. This is video from any application I have installed, Facebook, YouTube, even video advertising embedded in games doesn't play.
I have tried clearing application data, I have tried a factory reset, I have tried using the repair feature in Sony PC Companion.
The problem persists regardless of whether I'm using wifi or mobile data.
Apart from buying another phone (non-Sony), I don't know what else to do.

Are you able to play local files? For example, a video that you have recorded with the camera application.

Videos play fine in safemode and after rebooting back to standard mode they still play fine, so far

If it happens again I'll uninstall my downloaded apps 1 by 1

I have booted into safemode and video playback was fine. After restarting the phone to boot back to normal mode the video playback is still fine across all apps.

Well that didn't last long. It has resumed it's previous course of not playing any videos.
