Do you hear other notifications in your device and it's only when you receive a text message that you do not hear a notification? I recommend that you start with restarting your phone in safe mode and ask someone to send a SMS to you, or if you send one to yourself (you will need to tap the home button quickly after it has been sent if you are sending it to yourself since you will not receive a notification if the application is opened up on your screen).

You can also make sure that the application is not blocked from sending notification. You can check this in Settings > Apps > Messaging > Notifications. Make sure that "Block all" is not activated. If it is, turn this off.
