Screen locks when making a call - xperia z3 compact

hi

Having the following issue with my xperia z3 compact: when initiating a call  the phone locks with no way for me to hangup or othetwise do anything. I cannot unclock in an possible wa. Need to wait for the other part to hand up ( i end up leaving crazy long vmails) or plug in a charge that wakes up the phone 

Tested the proximity senso by (*#*#7378423#*#* > Servise Tests > Proximity Switch ). It is on.

What else can it be? Any hint would be appreciated (pls kindly provide detailed explanation, I am not up to speed witht all that the tech words)

Something is blocking the light from the proximity sensor, so when you get a call it gets activated as if the phone is on your ear.

Possible reasons: screen protectors poorly placed, factory protection sheet that comes out of the box still on, debris or dirt on the proximity sensor.
