So when you are on a telephone call, you cannot hear the other party? Does the earpiece work at all (i.e. does it work for a while and then stop), or does it not work at all?
It might sound obvious, but try pressing "up" on the volume keys (on the side)... You'd be surprised at how many people forget this.
When you run a diagnostics test (Settings-->About phone-->Diagnostics-->Test), does it show that the volume buttons are working?
If that doesn't work, do you have the same issue when your smartphone is in Safe Mode?
