everytime I start the app it works for 5-10 seconds til a message comes up saying I can't play

Try clearing app cache and data, uninstall it, restart phone and install again, if that doesn't work I would advise contacting app developers since it is a third party app, you can get the contact in Google Play page of the app.
If your phone is rooted, or has a custom ROM you will not be able to play the game, that's not on Sony but Niantic
I have the same issue. If it runs at all, after about 30s same error appears.
Still, it's better than on my tablet, on which it used to work just fine, but not anymore. Doesn't even start now there.
I didn't play this game for a long time, just downloaded it recently, and this bs is what I see. The most irritating thing is it does work, but only for a while, so it doesn't have anything to do with incompatibility.
PoGo got a LOT heavier and hardware demanding, still the Z5 should run it ok, I can run it on an Xperia Z1, it does lag a lot and crash every now and then, that's ONLY using PoGo not any other app, as for any app issues, it is up to the app developer, in this case Niantic, to address the issue.
