if you have google account with the phone, you can check google contacts to see if the contacts where sync to the account

i'm afraid you can only extract the backup using the same software that was used to create the backup. which in this case is the device itself, I am not sure but if you place the sd card in another xperia device, it might see the backup file.

Hi Devaid,

Did you create the backup using the Backup and Restore section or did you simply use the Backup section within contacts and saved a CSV to the SD card?

Hello Jake-SonyXperiaSupport, I have also a CSV file, but it is very old. If I had this updated file is very easy to put in the spare phone (is a Samsung S4 mini) while the Z3 Compact will be repaired (I hope), normally I use the backup and restore app with daily backup, which creates a file in the Sony / BnR directory,

That's unfortunate, the backed up file uses the OS to be able to import it, I have no instructions that would allow you to achieve this task.

Sorry for this inconvenience.

I thought so, at this point I wonder what use can have a backup that can be used or recovered only from the same phone (OS) and nor via PC SW. I definitely do not spend another 500 euro for another sony just to recover contacts. It has already failed with the IP protection of the phone covers (only one time I used it under the rain and the IP failed, the connector of the dock detached after less than one month old. In addition to the questionable quality of these details that make the difference from other manufacturers (I had bought for this and the z5 has no more the dock connector... why???), the software also has some incomprehensible usage limits as in this case (I have more usage examples limits to report but this tops them all). since the selling price of sony z3 could engage a little more, maybe sony should pass up the fingerprint reader gadgets and concentrate on something more substantial for a phone that wants to be at the high end.

PS: the average life of my phones is more than 5 years and those that I put in the drawer still work (as the "spare" S4 mini I'm using it again now) so I do not think of using them too rough.

Hello, Did you finally get a solution?
HOW TO RESTORE DATA FROM "Sony BnR" folder. WITHOUT USING THE SAME EXACT DEVICE?
I did a backup via "Backup and Restore" to SD card -> Android -> data -> Sony BnR
Now my Sony Z3c is dead.
And I can't extract this files from "Sony BnR" folder.
NO OTHER PHONE UNDERSTAND THIS DATA.
XPERIA COMPANION CANT READ IT EITHER.
AND THERE IS NO ORIGINAL SONY "Backup and Restore" APP in Google Play store (to download and try in another device).
How can I get my contacts back?
Is there any software for PC to read this files in Sony BnR folder?

P.S. A girl from call center didn't help much. Just said I should try the same exact phone model to restore data from SD.

Hello shenax... yes I solved my problem, honestly I don't rembember the solution because I did it in July  of 2016'

but I found the solution on the web searching how to "extract data from experia backup". I downloaded a utility to open the backup and then to extract the files as a compressed file (not .zip)

I have transferred the address book as a vcf file to another phone
