I have read several having the problem with screen going black during a call, but my problem is different in that it does not even work to make the call. Phone works fine using all apps, sending SMS etc, but once I try to place a call, the screen goes black and I do not hear any signals going through or nothing. At the other end the call takes place, but with noone on the line. Same for incoming calls, looks ok until I press answer button, then the screen goes black and I can not hear or be heard. Once the call is ended from the other side, which can take long in case of answering machines etc, the phone looks ok again. I have taken off the screen cover and cleaned the phone and I have reset the phone completely, but problem remains. Anyone has a clue what the problem is!?

can you go to
Settings » Accessibility
and see if "Power button ends call" is disabled, near the bottom of the menu
If it isn't, disable it, and next time you use Call, receiving or send, and the display turns off, press the power button. See if the display comes back on
I've had a bug recently where I could only answer the call by using the answer button on the notification shade, because I had the dialer open in the background, while I was typing messages in another App, and I locked the phone at the same time a voice call came in, and the normal calling screen to answer got hidden
I guess u use 4G signal right.? Try to change to 3G..4G cant use for call right now..please click solve problem if my answer is helpfull
It was disabled...
Sorry, did not do it.
Sorry, all settings right...

Do you have backups of everything?
There's something wrong, because that setting should always turn the display on when you are in a call.
The next option would be factory reset to see if the problem is fixed during a software reset
In Lollipop the camera acted as as secondary CCD/Proximity sensor, so that both Proximity and Front Camera bits must get flagged for the display to recognized that you have the phone to your ear.
I might flag this this to escalate, as I'm curious to see if Sony can make changes to add something like this back to override Google's global defaults
I have exactly the same issue.
I am using an E6653 - Android version 7.1.1
Security patch 1 Sept 2017
Build - 32.4.A.1.54
When making or receiving calls the screen goes Black and I am unable to use any of the in call functions like the key pad etc - to hang up a call I had the enable the power button to hang up function as the screen never returned.
Is there a fix due soon ?
