XZ1 Compact Zoom not available

Why do I get "Zoom currently not available" when using volume key or finger stretch on screen for front facing camera?

I tried zoom on the rear view camera and it works.

I thought I might need to switch to manual, but tried that and still got the message.

How do I get it to work on the front facing camera?

My Xperia 1 displays a much clearer statement: "Cannot zoom with front camera"

I suppose XZ1 front camera cannot zoom either.
