XZ1 compact, play support libraries updated last night, 20 other apps asked to update

My XZ1 compact updated automatically last night, the play support libraries, although I had shut off auto-update. I looked in Google Play and 20 other apps suddenly wanted to update too. Is this normal?

That's normal and annoying but there's a way around it

Settings > network & internet > data usage > app data usage > scroll down to Google Play services > Background data > off
