Unknown sources option is missing

Hi,

I'm trying to install an app and I need to click the unknown sources tab to allow it but this is not under security settings  where everyone says it should be. Any ideas as to what to do? TIA

Hi @Sarah21, welcome to the forum! Slightly_smiling_Face

In Android 8.0 this was changed, and now you can find it by following this guide:

Find and tap Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special access > Install unknown apps.

Select which apps you want to be allowed to install apps from unknown sources by tapping the app, then drag the slider beside Trust apps from this source to the right.

Let me know if this helped you and have a great weekend! Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi I have tried this but the app I want to install is not on the list 🤔

@Sarah21you misunderstood. you need to do that for the app that you're trying to access the apk file with. for example, if you're trying to open the apk with a file manager, then you'll need to approve the file manager that you're using.

Hi no I get that put when I click the app I want it just disappears there is no way to approve it. Its an app we use at work so it's not from the app store. When I got to the unknown sources but I have a list of apps there but none of those are the app I need to install. I'm completely stumped. My colleague has put the link on our work Tesco page when I click on the app link to install it the screen goes to my Google homepage screen, I have searched my downloads and I can't find the app anywhere. I have allowed all sources that it could possibly come from but still nothing

it sounds to me like the link you're clicking leads to Google Drive and you need to log into your Google account in order to access it.

Hi again @Sarah21

This works as follow, you need to give permission for the app which you are trying to install the file from. For example if you are getting the link in Chrome, you need to give permissions for Chrome to install from unknown sources.

Get back to me with the results! Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi,

The app is an app used at work and my colleague put the link to it on Facebook, I have allowed Facebook, chrome, Google, Google drive. It's still not working I'm nor sure how to find the exact link it's coming from??

Hi @Sarah21

That sounds strange. Do you know what type of file this is? Normally it should be a apk file that you install by enabling the unknown sources. What happens now exactly if you press the link?

Could you maybe upload a screenshot of the messages you are getting?

Let me know how it went! Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi, I will upload pics in the order that the pages appear, so first is our store Facebook page where the link is, then when I click download for android, and then the install inform app which then when I click this take me to my Google homepage.

Sarah This is the page once I click the link, I then click on download for androidThis is the page once I click the link, I then click on download for android

This then opens this page (2nd) and I click install inform appThis then opens this page (2nd) and I click install inform app

(3rd) the page then disappeared and goes straight to this page(3rd) the page then disappeared and goes straight to this page

I'm very confused as to what to do next or how to find the app or allow it to be installed 🙄
