the messages icon when tapped goes straight to notification screen-can't retrieve messages

My messages app was working but it is now showing 8 messages and when I tap on the icon it takes me straight to the notification screen. I have turned background data off for some apps. I have checked and it appears all apps with sms have been left on. I don't know what has happened. I can't see any messages at all, just straight to the notification screen and it appears all correct.

I'm sorry to be a bother. After over an hour I finally have a notification pop up for WAP push. I selected and messages now opening.
