I was psyched when the pie update finally brought the dark theme / mode to messaging to my XZ1C
This morning I was prompted for another update, and when I rebooted, they removed it! What gives? They gave it to us for like 4 weeks?
Can we have this back? It's great for battery, and is way easier on the eyes .
Solved! Go to Solution.
Last version available is 3.8.043, see if you can update it in Google Play.
That is strange because I'm still on Oreo August Patch and I have Dark Mode in the stock Messaging App. It came with an update to the App a few months ago and can be enabled or disabled in the App Settings.
The Dark Theme in Google Messages pre installed app is not normally added/removed by the system updates but by the app released updates.
I still have the Dark Mode option in my Messages app with last Pie build number (I have a XZ Premium but the firmware is the same).
What version of Messages app do you have?
Have you tried restarting the phone again?
Version is 3.4.048
When I opened the app the screen was white, and the setting is gone from the menu .
Frustrating.
Dark theme and the switch in the menu still there for me after last update.

That did it! Not sure why the last update rolled back my messages version, but dark mode is back.
I will say for any future users with the issue, when I got to the play store, at first glance it didn't look like an update was available . The button on the right said "open" instead of "update" The update button was off to the left.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
So it turns out a bunch of my apps were rolled back with that update. Weirdest thing . And despite having all my setting on auto update despite the connection type, they're not doing so.
I've updated a bunch manually, which has fixed a bunch of buggy behavior in various apps, but my email is bugging out w my Hotmail account, and I can't find it anywhere to update or check versions .
Even my Google play app appears to be an older edition compared to the one knows my wife's Samsung S7. where it usually shows my installed apps and their status, is empty . (?!)
I'll start a new thread for that, but given its all related, I figured I'd post it here too.
@zero_vertical,
For reference the Play Store version on my Oreo XZ1C is 12.9.12all[PR]224566662.
On a side note, after a Phone App update Dark Mode is working on that as well.
Have you tried to delete the Cache and Data from Play Store to see if that helps. If you do this it may take a day or so for it to settle down and synchronise again.
