Customize navigation soft-buttons?

Is it possible to customize soft-buttons on the bot of the screen? Or do I have to root my xz premium the first thing I do now? 

I need the menu-key badly. 

There is un-used black space to the left of back button, perfect spot for one more key.

the menu key isn't supported anymore to my knowledge. it will automatically appear in some ancient apps that don't use the overflow menu (the three dots that most apps have in the top bar).

Yes, those three dots or three lines are placed differently or sometimes even hidden in apps.  

My google searches indicate that root privileges are needed for such customization app (like UDN lite). 

Please shed if you have more knowledge on this.

actually I realized that an app that I use allows you to add a menu button. you don't need root to use it, but you'll need to grant it a permission via an adb command https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.paphonb.systemuituner

@rubinho89 it's also possible with the app that I linked above. you'll need either root access or adb connection with your PC in order to make it work, though.

yeah, I use it to add a button that pulls down the notification area so that I don't have to reach the top of the screen. I just didn't realize it also supported a menu button function until I specifically looked for that

I have a e5 and your app isn't available to my phone is there any other app or way to add a menu button?
