Xperia Z5 - headphones with button not detected

I bought an Xperia Z5 yesterday, and everything is working fine apart from my headphones not being recognised at all.

Firstly I tried my decent headphones which have an inline pause button which I've previously used without problem with my old android phone (Nexus 4), and the phone doesn't detect them at all, music still plays fully through the speakers.

I then plugged in an old pair with no inline controls, and they half played the music, (really low volume), with volume still coming out of the speaker.

I looked back at the issues seen on the Z3 and downloaded the soundabout app and tried to force the sound through the headphones, still nothing. I deleted the cache of the smart connect, chose the "music on the go option" and rebooted the phone.

Now I can get music properly through my old rubbish headphones without a button, but still nothing at all through my decent headphones with a button., with or without using the soundabout app.

Is this an issue with the headphone jack that i'll need to send the phone back for repair? Or is it a compatibility issue..(the headphones are "android" headphones so I find this doubtful?  The headphones 100% work.

Any suggestions or help much appreciated.

It is a compatibility issue, the Z3, Z3+/Z4 and Z5 use a 5 pin 3.5mm pole, you can use regular 3-pin pole to work just fine for audio and mic, but if you add a button or buttons then it might not work.

I have a problem with Z1 where it does not detect a change of state for the jack (with 3 and 4-pin headphones).

Usually I tried removing and reinserting the jack until the phone "vibrated" due to smart connect. But done too quickly (less than 2s/action) would have a latent feedback (where I've already done the opposite action).

My problem never appeared right after reboot. And it could take 1-5 days to reappear. Bear in mind that I did not listen to headphones daily.

Also, the 1st time this proved really annoying was when I removed the headphones but the phone still acted like connected. I've had 3 consecutive "silent" incomming calls. The 3rd was my father and I realised my phone could be the problem. Solved it with the reinsertions mentioned above.

So my advice is activate music-at-home and music-on-the-go and when inserting the headphones, if smart connect does not vibrate within 2-3s, remove and try again.

I have exactly the same issue.

But I have had my Xperia Z5 compact for nearly 4 months now, and my headphones with a button on have been working absolutely fine until yesterday. Now it does not recognise them and I can't listen to music through my headphones.

Yet when I plug in a standard 3.5mm jack without a button they work fine.

Did anyone find a solution?

This phone has many minor faults which are really begining to bug me

I had similar issue with Z1C - the phone would not recognize SONY own headphones (with speaker)  but any other headset was OK. I had to remove all updates of Smartconnect and reinstall it. Then it worked oK for a while and then I had to do the same. I just quit using SONY headphones.
