SOLUTION to this problem:

turn off any Bluetooth devices around that may try to connect to your Z1 while it starts up. It will boot up like nothing ever happened.

and make sure you have optomised backlight ticked/enabled in display settings

@GeoffH

I have checked this like hundred times to confirm the real cause of the problem. This option doesn't really matter. If any BT keep scanning for your phone, and actually make it, you can have the "optimize backlight" option enabled or disabled, won't make any difference, phone will still hang for a looong while and end up permanently backlighted.

Where's the reset button???

If you say so but I find that hard to believe - not saying it's wrong but I would have thought BT and general wireless functions on the phone would be some of the last things to be enabled in the boot sequence

anyway we know there is a bug I have experienced it and I don't have any BT devices in my range ever so when I see this problem on my device it is not linked to BT and it hasn't happened to me for a long time

Reset button for Z1 - located next to the sim card slot...lift cover to find it.

I had same problem with backlight optimization turned ON.

I turned it OFF and for now (second day of usage) is working...

Hi all,

I got my Xperia Z1 on Sunday and I have already faced the dead screen issue twice. Both the times, I could get the screen back up with a hard reset (using the off button and volume up button together). Initially I thought the phone died due to battary drain out but I am almost sure that that's not the problem.

After reading comments here, I checked and found the backlight optimization turned "ON". I have now turned it "OFF". I will let you know if it resolves the problem. I also would like to mention that I don't have any bluetooth device around and bluetooth is switched OFF on my phone.

I checked the firmware version on my phone and it is Xperia Z1 14.1.G.1.518.  Could this be the cause?? I know there is an updated firmware version being rolled out.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

Even I got the same problem, suddenly screen got dead when I inserted sim. So I did factory reset after which saved my phone for one day.
But after a day again the problem has started then I have installed apps one by one and found out task manager killer app was causing this problem so I have uninstalled tat app.
Now my phone is perfect without any issue.
And optimized backlash is on from the beginning.
