Dear Sony! Sorry for my bad english. First i'm writing what i'm think how is it work the auto brightness:
light sensor in my phone is controling the lcd's brightness, if the sensor sens bigger lights , increase the brightness
and you see better. If checking lower lights, reduce the brightness, this is easy control. In my previous phone, in
xperia p this is working good. But now i have new xperia sp smart phone and i do not undersand why making
this: if im set manually high(maybe 80%) and after click automatic the brightness little bit lower
after this im set manually low(maybe 30%) and after click automatic coming the interesting : the brightness is lower then was before
when im clicking auto from manual (80%) i think why not equal the brightness on automatic settings if the light size not changes.
I make this test not once and in the place the light size was equal.
I do not know why depending the auto brightness from the previous manul settings? Please answer me

The "auto brightness" option is bugged on the SP... known issue (hopefully). It just changes to -10%, or to +10%. I dont see this tho. It just doesnt work.
Jozso from Hungary, lol.
Yeah the auto - brightness doesnt work at all .
The auto brigthness works by only +10% or -10% of the brigthness set manually, you can download Yet Another Auto Brightness from the Play Store it's free and works awesome, I myself use it.
Auto brightness is simply very sophisticated on SP!
I am not playing smart, or whatever... You just have to understand it!
If you place slider to about 30% it will give you darker image overall, but if you put it to about 80% the picture will be brighter! That's all!
Automatic brightness is always on! And I like it!
I actually love it much more than Samsung's solutions...
Download LUX. It's a superb app.

I have the same problem, seems like it is not solved in any software update.
