xperia s wma support

am i correct in saying the xperia s has no wma support??? will this be somethign that will be added? my htc desire, 3 year old peice of kit had wma support.

You are correct.

Although anything is possible, adding audio support is not something common for us. I would not expect to see support for this in the future.

Fortunately, it is possible to play wma files on your Xperia S (or any other Android device). You need to use a music player from the Play Store which uses its own codecs. My personal favourite is Poweramp, but there are many others.

Why not? Sony MP3 Players support WMA so why wouldn't Sony make an effort to bring over the codec support to the phone as well? Or does Sony expect it's phone not to be used as a music player hence such little effort is put into it?

The whole reason why my music collection is in WMA format is because my Sony MP3 players supported it (NWZ-A815, NWZ-A829), yet i can't transition over to Sony's phone as my dedicated music player because apparently Sony think people who use their phones weren't previously using their MP3 players?!

WMA format should really be supported in the XperiaS; it's silly to have it in your audio players and not in your flagship phone.

The Sony PSP which is over 8 years old also offered WMA playback, why make something new with less capabilities then an old PSP? And now we are forced to pay for an app? Poweramp isn't free, i tried rocketplayer, but WMA support isn't available in the free version. Does anyone know a good free app with WMA support?

Does anyone know whether the upgrade to ICS (android 4.0) has WMA support?

Most computers are windows so all audio cds ripped by WMplayer are in WMA format; why treat this format like a leper?

Speaking from recent movement by Microsoft anything that uses Microsofts patents have to now be paid for - For example TomTom can no longer use the FAT32 format, The reason for accusing TomTom of patent infringement was that other companies that utilize Microsoft patents have bought licenses from Microsoft,

So as WMA stands for Windows Media Audio then to hazzard a guess Sony do not want to pay Microsoft for using one of their patents and as such scrub it from the compatibility list

I could be wrong but TomTom aren't the only company that uses or used patents belonging to Microsoft that have had this done to them
