Xperia S headphone issues

I know there are heaps of conversations going on about this but nothing has helped me much so far. I've got an Xperia S and Sennheiser headphones. When I got the phone the headphones worked. Now they don't work. There is no mike or volume or any other functionality on these headphones. I've seen the discussions about OMTP and CTIA and despite not making much sense it seems to be more related to additional functionality than to a simple set of headphones. All I want to know is if I need an adapter or if I can get a software update or app to make the headphones work. I don't want to know about which headphones will work with which phones because I've got good headphones. I just want to make them work.

Cheers.

Did the headphones ceasing functioning happen to tie in with another change such as running an update to the phone etc?

Unfortunately there was quite some time between using the headphones on the phone and then finding out that they didn't work and there were updates including a major update. i wouldn't be able to pinpoint which of these occurred before I noticed that the headphones stopped being recognised. I did submit a query to Sony about this and the respondant suggested that I wait for the next update for the problem to be resolved. Clearly the update hasn't fixed the issue.

Thanks.

It may still be that there was an error in the loading of the firmware, in which case I would advise running a repair to reload the firmware:

1. Download the PC Companion software from http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
and install it on your PC.
2. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.
3. Phone Software Update.
4. Start.
5. Repair Phone
6. Continue
7. Accept data removal
8. Next
9. Wait for prepare
10. Select Phone
11. Follow the connection steps
