Xperia Pro data traffic issue

I bought an Xperia Pro a week ago in replacement of an HTC Desire Z that bust.

All seems good except for an issue I am having with going online when not on WiFi.

Firstly I have to apologise that I'm not very technical and so sorry if this post seems a bit amaturish.

Ok, well most of times I try to go online without being on WiFi nothing seems to happen. In the notification bar at the top of the screen I get a "H" with up and down arrows which I take to be the data going in or out. The up arrow flashes and then they both go "clear" and this just cycles, then it will change from "H" to "3G" and the same cycling happens. Occasionally I eventually get a data connection error message saying it could not connect and please try again later.

I do occasionally get connection and it works fine but can be unstable, failing at any time. Generally tho at the moment I pretty much cant get online or am able to check emails during the day unless I can get on a WiFi connection.

If it helps I'm on Jersey Telecom.

Any ideas ?

do you have a data plan?

go to settings -> sony ericsson -> internet settings

contact your network/carrier and ask about the 3G coverage around your house/area, it might be a network issue

Yup, I have a data plan

I have also gone through the configurations in the set up wizard and downloaded the relevant settings for this.

My location is in the centre of the main town here so its unlikely to be poor coverage. My old HTC was fine from the same location suggesting it is poor reception by the phone. Is this a known issue ?

sometimes networks send you the OTA APN settings incomplete, I know that happen often here in the US. you can try to enter them manually

settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> access point names -> MENU -> add New

enter the info

MENU -> save

you can google the apn settings:

android apn settings "name of your carrier"

just because you live in the center of the main town, it doesn't mean good coverage, there are dead spots all over even near towers, also if there are tall buildings that will block the signal. I would call the network and ask if there are any 3G/faux 4G towers down
