Xperia Neo Screen Capture

Hi.. my phone still has Gingerbread 2.3.4 installed. It is pathetic. How do I do a screen capture? Everyone says power and volume down for 2 secs, but nothing happens! I try and install software, but get a 'parsing error' message, or that the phone has to be 'rooted'?

Any advice please (other than throwing it out of the car at 120, which I am ready to do)

press the Volume Down and Power buttons at the SAME TIME, hold them for a second, and your phone will take a screenshot.
