I wanted to ask when are the Xperia ion users getting Jelly Bean update?
Sony is very lazy in providing updates... All other brands have Jelly Bean 4.2 in place and Xperia users are struggling to get Jelly Bean 4.1 update
You pay 35K for a phone and don't even get an OS update for it. Complete waste!!
Well stated. I love my ION and had planned on passing it to my wife and getting my self a ZL. Now though I dont think I can justify that kind of an investment and have the lack of support with updates. Most (if not all) of the "upper end" phones on the market get updates very quickly...One of he biggest reasons I pay more for a higher end phone is so my phone is not an antique in a year!!! I have a feeling if Sony would stop worrying so much about customizing the OS that things would go much smoother and quicker with the updates. Google does a fine job with the OS, why not let the experts worry about the OS and stop thinking you (Sony) can make it better? Sony could then have gotten the update out nearly as soon as it was released from Google
Amen to that.
Beside of adding the logo and maybe a few graphical touch-ups to give to bring in the brand it shouldn't take more than an hour or so to do it. With mostly a day or two for hardware modifications I see no reason on why it is taking so much time for them other than they have programmers who are apperantly not up to the task. I mean I made a custom ROM within a few days without knowing the exact hardware for some noname chinese tablet that I bought (3.1 to 4.0) and I'm not that much of a super genious programmer so I really need to hear one h.ell of an excuse from Sony regarding the delay and super long deployment times.
Wow. If it is that easy, why not you do it? If it is that easy, that should be a lot of ROMs in XDA. Why am I saying this? Because it is NOT easy. The kernel, framework and lots more have to be re-written for 4.1.
There is a CyagenMOD available for quite some time now. I want a ROM from sony so I can keep my waranty
So I can at least enjoy the free repairs for the next few months that I have.
Ohh lee480 here?? Well said. If that is the way it must be then SONY will release only device without OS and tell every customer to build there own firmware from source of android and use there phone. And also you said on XDA it should be released on 14th of april. Where is it? Is 14th of april is in the future?
I think you shoul have android 1.5 on your Ion that would run so fast and smoothly
I'I'm here mate! You claimed I said 14 April. Give me the link. Even if I did say, it is only an assumption. And why are you so dumb? Never seen such a dumb people. I already said and stated clearly it is very difficult to make a phone update and you are saying i said every customer should build their own OS. No link = Extremely low intellectual skills. And I can double confirm, I running stock, unmodified, Android 4.0 ICS, without lag.
@lee 480
Your right, it is not that easy at all when you change so much with Android.. The point I make though is Sony could make it much, much easier on themselves by dropping most of the custom stuff and not messing with the kernal so much. I have taken source and made minor changes and tweeks myself as matter of fact for the S2 that my wife now uses. Although it took a willingness to learn and quite a bit of trial and error; it went fairly quickly. It took me about 3 weeks to figure everything out and make the changes that I wanted. Although I am well versed in electronics, I am certainly not a programmer and do not do it for a living. A team of 2 or 3 good programmers versed in Android and Sony's mods should certainly be able to make changes inside a week for each headset. How many headsets were ahead of the ION when 4.1 hit? 6 maybe? I would have expected the ION update then 6-8 weeks after release of code from Android. And that is only using one team of programmers doing one headset at a time. I think that is a more than reasonable expectation for someone like Sony. Either they just flat don't care about their headset updates or they have a serious management issue with the android programmers. Either I think would be embarrassing to the company.
PS. I don't think I have unreasonable expectations for the life of the unit. I would be OK with the current OS plus the next 2 updates for a phone I purchase. At the rate of release thats a year or less. By the time the third update is released I'd probably be ready for a new headset anyway. That gives me about 18 months of decent usage......I think that is fair to both me and Sony considering what we pay for any of the top units.
It is difficult for only SONY? Some other company even release 4.2. But we are still expecting for 4.1. And I know what are you going to say when i say it "Buy a google nexus to get update directly from google:
It isn't about buying nexus or anything. it is about SONY being careless about their customers. I don't worry about the update. I am going to buy Xperia Z next month. But there are many customers care about that. And even after Z I will buy another SONY phone. I can live with that.
But what others can?
Completely disagree. Part of Sony's draw and uniqueness in their phones is their creative designs and software innovation that other brands don't provide. I don't think you realize the advantage you have in social, media inegration and camera technology by owning a Sony phone. If they need extra time to personalize and improve Google's OS then they should take it, I wouldn't be buyin their phones otherwise.
And like previous people have said, be more patient. ICS is still a great OS and another advantage of Sony customizing the OS is that ICS has some Jelly Bean features already.
I just wish that they would actually give us an actual DATE as to when the update will finally be available, instead of leaving us in the dark, as always. My Ion really needs the update as the battery life requires too much micromanaging and the Battery Saver App is HORRIBLE (It doesn't even remember the settings I put in after I turn off or reset the phone, and at default settings it TURNS ON the backlight when activated -- how does that conserve battery life)? I also need those mini-apps as I'm sick and tired of not being able to do basic multi-tasking without jumping in and out using the Home button all the time.
Sadly, I've already seen the Jellybean update on the T and they still haven't added a genre category to the Walkman App, and the software is still too dumb to know the difference between a music track and a podcast, so shuffling all tracks leads to all kinds of nonsense. There are so many fires that Sony Mobile needs to put out but they take forever and a day to deal with each problem...if at all.
