Persons I am talking to tell me they hear a strong echo of their own voice and therefore have difficulties understanding me.
I don't know if the problem existed before updating to ICS because my phone was quite new then.
I have sent my xperia to a repair center, but they have not been able to reproduce the problem at all (I had sent the device stripped of all covers).
Now I found information in a thread here, that a similar problem disppears when you open the covers for USB and earphone outlet.
This is exactly the same with my phone! No echo at all when the covers are open...
The software version is Kernel 2.6.32.9-perf Build 4.0.2.A.0.69
What should I do about this?
I have had an Experia Active for about 9 mos. Model ST17a. Upgraded to android 4.0.4. Had low sound volume originally - Sony on-line help coached me through an upgrade to add XLoud which fixed the issue. Everything worked find until, all of sudden, 3 days ago, the incoming and outgoing calls echo very badly so that people receiving my calls cannot understand me. I turned off XLoud and turned down the volume which I typically keep all the way up. I also turned of the 'background suppression' noise setting. None of these actions helped. I reviewed the support forum note and saw that some folks found relief when the USB/charging port cover was open. Remarkably this is true for my phone. When open - no echo. When closed - lots of echo and tinny sound. Is there a way to fix this condition?
If I reset the software will I lose my Android update that I uploaded after purchasing the phone?
Johan - see my post on this issue - Is there a resolution since this problem surfaced last year? Thanks
If you don't experience the echo when the USB cover is open I suggest that you have the phone examined by a service center. Please contact your local support for more information about sending the phone to service:

Your phone will not be downgraded if you reset your phone. You will only lose you personal data, not your system updates.
I've had echo problem, probably appeared after my nervous hit the phone into stairs rail, software change didn't help, but after disassemble and reassemble problem has gone. So far third week is ok.
so if Your phone is no longer under warranty, U can try this solution
I solved the problem at last by replacing the black cover by the white cover that come with the phone.
I can't see any differences between them, though, besides the colour...:smileyquestion:
The "solution" with the white cover lasted for 2 weeks, now the echo is back.
I'll give up and buy a new smartphone - certainly not a SONY.
We have two active phones , both with the same echo problem. Have been searcing the web for a problem solving on this malfunction. No joy so far.
Therefore iit seems like a problem that is not possible to fix.
And to start sending the two phones to Sony to be fixed does not seem to either be the solution.
Irritating, therefore I will buy two new smart phones, and not the same brand.
