As far I know, you do not need root to connect ps3 control, here's a link

im afraid its only for xperia SP.or maybe the latest sony handset.at least i can't find any menu about controller ps3 on my xperia SL.maybe only for specific region like playstation mobile only for US custromer or another country.i hope we got feature like xperia SP bcoz we have similar specifications.

I saw on this topic a ps3 control connected to a non root xperia s. apparently you need a otg cable to connect it. or maybe you need an update, good luck if that's the case
You will only loose Bravia engine etc if you unlock your bootloader as doing that will erase your DRM keys - these are linked to Bravia and the ability to download music info
